According to the Deer Project Coordinator Nelson Lafon, “Rifle season has always been the bread and butter because it’s the most efficient weapon. More deer hunters will be out this time of year than the whole season.”

The motivation to create the app comes from the state being able to collect data on deer harvests. By analyzing past years’ activities and identifying the factors that led to good and bad seasons, they are able to predict the season’s activity and where deer will congregate.

Some of the factors include weather, migration, and environmental changes. For example, wind can keep deer inactive, so they are harder to hunt. Knowing this is a problem, the app is able to tell hunters whether it’s a good to hunt, and where deer may be hiding due to the wind.

Since deer protect themselves with their sense of smell, sight, and hearing, the colder weather makes it harder for them to know if a hunter is nearby. On colder days, the app can alert hunters to the low detection rate by deer, which will make efforts much more fruitful.
