Second Amendment Foundation Fires Back at Homeland Security Secretary’s ‘Gun Control’ Statement

Johnson believes gun control is "critical element" in protecting US from terrorists

SAF Fires Back at Jeh Johnson's Gun Control Statement

The Second Amendment Foundation is outspoken on matters of government and its seemingly unrelenting course to propose stricter gun control measures on the American people. The most recent involves Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who quips that gun control is a “critical element” in protecting the United States from terrorists.

High-level government officials continue believing in stricter gun control

SAF fires back that the right to keep and bear arms is the nation’s original homeland security, and that Johnson must not forget that, PR Newswire reports.

SAF founder and executive vice president Alan M. Gottlieb asserts that terrorist threats are “exactly why the Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment.” He continues that “every American has the right to self-defense, and for Johnson to contend that infringing on that right is the way to keep the country safe is simply preposterous.”

The Homeland Security secretary recently said in an interview that the U.S. has to “face the fact that meaningful gun control has to be a part of homeland security.”

Gottlieb disputed Johnson’s remarks by saying the system needs to “maximize the ability of law-abiding citizens to exercise their right to bear arms.” He said good people fighting back are what deters terrorists, not imposing gun-free zone designations. As he pointed out, gun-free zone designations did little to stop the carnage in San Bernardino, Orlando, and Paris.

The SAF founder went on to say that restricting concealed carry laws would turn citizens into victims instead of people who can defend themselves against very real threats.

Jeh Johnson’s gun control stance is “completely backwards,” Gottlieb insists. He agrees that no one wants terrorists or criminals to possess guns, but “laws that penalize honest Americans, and that ban certain types of firearms, will not prevent bad people from committing mayhem.”

The issue isn’t firearms, but “fanatics,” Gottlieb says. He notes that President Barack Obama is unable to “acknowledge who and what the enemy is” without showing his disdain for legitimate scrutiny on national television. Gottlieb says it’s “dishonest” and “delusional” for the president or Jeh Johnson to make citizens believe that doing away with the Second Amendment would stop terrorists from attacking America.

Senate rejects series of gun control measures

In spite of President Obama’s efforts to impose stricter gun control legislation, there wasn’t enough bipartisan support for several gun control laws to pass on June 21. Reuters reports that among the proposals rejected was one presented by Republican Senator Susan Collins that would’ve prevented people named on two government terrorism watch lists from getting firearms.
