Chris Christie Called Out For Protecting New Jersey’s “Semiautomatic Assault Weapon Ban”

His stance on the 2nd Amendment is less than solid

Draconian gun laws of New Jersey are discussed on countless occasions.  It’s so bad, it’s an ongoing joke when gunowners talk about gun rights.

“Hey, at least it’s not New Jersey,” is usually the punchline.

Well, a Republican candidate from the grand state of New Jersey has stepped up and said he supports the 2nd Amendment.  That’s never been a big surprise.  What is surprising is that same candidate’s political rise to power was paved with promises to keep the law-abiding citizens of New Jersey disarmed.

The Daily Beast has been going on and on about Chris Christie’s apparent lack of disregard for his voting base by continually trying to cover up the fact he’s never been a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment.  They’ve gone so far as to dig up old mailers from back in his early days in the 1993 and 1995 campaigns for Assembly.

Quotes excerpted from the Star Ledger

In today’s society, no one needs a semiautomatic assault weapon,” said Chris Christie. “We already have too many firearms in our communities.”

That’s a direct quote from an interview Chris Christie gave to the Star Ledger in 1993.

It came shortly after he gave the voters his platform for running in the first place.

“The issue which has motivated me to get into this race is the recent attempt by certain Republican legislators to repeal New Jersey’s ban on assault weapons,” Christie said at the time.

We’re not discussing this because of some idle worry an assault ban is coming up.  Where this really comes into play is we have a candidate for the Presidency that comes from a very strict misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment.  Somewhere between the words “shall not infringe” and “right to bear arms”, Gov. Christie must have spilled coffee because there is no way imaginable New Jersey is a model for responsible gun ownership much less carrying concealed.

If you want to read more dirt on this issue, it seems there’s an endless supply over at the Daily Beast.

Here’s the problem… We’ve done really well for ourselves in preserving and expanding the 2nd Amendment.  From states going to constitutional carry to other states expanding onto school campuses, there’s a lot of really good stuff going on right now.

President Obama would love nothing more than to enact some form of national legislation that would utterly subvert all that work.

If you like the idea of teachers being able to protect their students, states erasing more and more imaginary “gun free zones”, and citizens standing up for their right to carry — we need a presidential candidate that supports all of that.

Chris Christie has gone ahead and made it apparent he is not that candidate.
